Russell Wilson Changes Course Towards NFL Draft

By Jackson | Posted Wednesday, January 18

Russell Wilson Badgers Quarterback

Russell Wilson's single season with the Wisconsin Badgers did something to change his career track. Instead of working for a spot in professional baseball last June, Wilson chose a starting position on the Badgers football team. Just last week, the quarterback told Colorado Rockies coaches that he would pass up this year's spring training with the team, and instead focus on preparing for the NFL draft.

Although the senior transfer from North Carolina had a solid three year career at that school, scouts were unimpressed when he announced that he would transfer to Wisconsin. Ask any scout where Russell Wilson would be following his senior season at Wisconsin, and most would say that he would be on a pitcher’s mound instead of an NFL roster. Ask that same scout now, and they would probably pick Wilson to go in the fourth or fifth round of the NFL draft.

Russell Wilson Senior Stats Impress NFL Scouts

Wilson exceeded any and all expectations in 2011. On a team that featured the run, he threw thirty-three touchdowns with only four interceptions. He made smart moves out of the pocket, and scrambled for major yardage when plays broke down. Although he will almost certainly spend a few years on the bench as a second or third string backup, Wilson may see starting time for an NFL team at some point in the future. Yes, Wilson is not the tallest QB in division 1A football, but he makes up for that with speed and smart passing.
