Badgers Hockey Team Comes Alive

By Brigham Badgers Tickets Fan | Posted Wednesday, February 1

After starting out the season 5-8, the Wisconsin Badgers hockey team is in the middle of a hot streak. Wisconsin has won six of its last seven games, giving up just one at Minnesota State. The team's latest success came over the weekend, as the Badgers swept Alaska-Anchorage. In the opening game, the Badgers took care of Anchorage 4-0, giving Wisconsin their second shut-out of the season.

Justin Schultz and center Mark Zengerle each scored a goal and had two assists in the game against the Seawolves. Zengerle’s score on Friday was his first since Mankato ended his twenty-game scoring streak last weekend. Frankie Simonelli and Jake McCabe would put up a pair in the second period before Schultz ended any hope of a miracle comeback with a late goal in the third.

In the second game the Seawolves fought hard on Saturday, holding the Badgers to a 2-2 tie late into the final period. Wisconsin's freshman goalie, Joel Rumpel found a way to keep the Seawolves from scoring once again. The Badgers topped Anchorage late in the game.

Rumpel, who helped manage two shut-outs in the past three weeks, is the Badgers first freshman goal-tender in thirty-years to manage two or more shut-outs in his debut season. Terry Kleisinger was the last Wisconsin goalie to notch multiple shut-outs. That came during the 1980-81 season. Rumpel was selected over fellow freshman Landon Peterson earlier this season to take the spot in the net.
